The Northwest Government Information Network (NGIN) meeting went well.

This is the first time we have added a teleconference feature for those libraries who live and work too far away from the meeting site. Participating via teleconference this year was Rebecca Moorman from University of Alaska Southeast. She was able to participate during the business meeting. Thank you Rebecca it was great having you there.

Lia Bolden from the Seattle's Regional Office of the U.S. Bureau of the Census presented a very good program on Census resources.

Leszek Chudzinski, Reference librarian from Seattle Public Library presented resources to some of the more common inquiries in Business reference.

At lunchtime, we all went to the Thai Garden where everyone had time to chat a little while and have a good time. The food was great!

At the business meeting, we looked at where should the Spring meeting be. Arlene Weible from WSL will be organizing our next meeting and suggested Walla Walla as a possible location with a presentation revolving around the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Marilyn von Seggern from WSU also volunteered her university as a possible meeting site as well. If anyone thinks of any topics they want to see presented for the Spring meeting, please send an email to Carlos A. Diaz (diazc@evergreen.edu) or to Arlene Weible (aweible@statelib.wa.gov).

We also heard reports from each depository:

According to GPO, MEDLINE can be used as a substitute for Index Medicus. Due to space constraints, WSL cannot keep all of its historical copies of Index Medicus as required. They have made a housing agreement with WSU who will maintain the official Regional Copy for the state of Washington. A few of the other depositories have been surprised by the reaction from faculty not to keep the paper edition of Index Medicus and are contemplating in removing it from their profile.

NGIN also looked into having a presence at WLA. We were too late for the combined Oregon and Washington meeting in April 2002 at Jantzen Beach, Oregon. But will consider having a program in the future.

Regional Depository Report:

Arlene Weible gave the regional depository report. She updated everyone on the WSL Move. Government Documents is scheduled to move its collection on October 23. But, this date is not set on stone since the library has experienced delays on hiring a mover.

Concerning State Documents, WSL usually keeps three copies of each state document (one non-circulating archival copy and two circulating copies). The State Librarian has asked that they get rid of the third copy. The third copy will be offered to state documents depositories first. Any remnants may be offered to other places. There will not be any lists created. Anybody wanting these will have to go to WSL, pick and choose what they want and take it with them on that day. They want to get rid of these titles as soon as possible. With the third copy gone that only leaves WSL with one circulating copy of state documents on hand.

GPO sent a letter last month asking that each state consider updating their State Plan. Washington's state plan had recently been revised in 1998 but Arlene wants us to take a look at it again in order to include some of the points the letter made. A committee was created consisting of Linda Fredericks from King County Library System (GPO Council Member), Tom Taylor from Fort Vancouver Regional Library and Marilyn von Seggern from Washington State University.
