I. Presentation
Presenter: Arlene Weible
Topic: Online Tools for Federal Depository Item Selection
During June and July, federal depository librarians will evaluate selections for their libraries
and add new items to their selection profile by July 31, 2002. Arlene presented an overview of
the Federal Depository Library Desktop and the Documents Data Miner 2 and how to use both when
working on this project. Detailed instructions on the evaluation and selection were published
in Administrative Notes, v. 23, #7 (May 15, 2002) and are also available on the GPO access website.
Arlene used the Documents Data Miner 2, which she described as a "one stop shopping" site, to evaluate items. She discussed using the tools, list of classes, shelf list, and shipping lists on this "work-in-progress" site.
She suggested that starting this process with a "zero-based" item review would be ideal but not realistic. Although this would make the project long and involved, it might be useful.
2. Business Meeting
Carlos Diaz opened the business meeting and thanked Arlene for her presentation. Arlene will be president this year. Robin Clausen, the new president-elect, will plan programs this year and Sue Anderson is the new secretary. Rob Lopresti will continue as webmaster and Carlos becomes past president.
All attendees reported on what was happening in their respective libraries. Our next meeting will be held on the West Side in the fall.
Everett Public Library is in the midst of remodeling.
·WSL will officially merge with the Secretary of State's office on July 1, and the governor will decide if there will be a new state librarian. Eighteen positions have been eliminated from the library. Although there is no real appropriation for libraries, the funds are in the governor's budget.
Whitman has a new 2-year old building. Compact shelving in the basement contains integrated regular and government periodicals and most government documents are also integrated into the book collection.
Ft Vancouver is having a bond election for a new building, selecting a new ILS, and using more electronic resources in reference.
WSU is facing budget cuts, as are the rest of the libraries.
University of Puget Sound is receiving older documents from the geology department and discarding some, the Media Department is now part of Systems, not the Library, and the director has resigned but will remain for another year.
University of Washington's Suzallo Library will be ready for reoccupation in September. Documents will be shelved with the microforms and all will be in open stacks in compact shelving for the first time. UW will partner with Cornell as part of the LC Project for 24/7 reference in real time chat reference.
King County spent $800,000 in a bond issue to get some money back for next year; their emphasis is on children and youth. They have cut off some print resources and decided to buy more electronic items. They are using LSSI, then later this month they will use Call Center Bridge, a quick reference chat service.
Tacoma Public still has many people interested in genealogy who use their library to search for ancestors. The library is using Marcive for a recon project.
Central Washington University has 80,000 maps of all 50 states.
Evergreen State College will be the regional library for WA, MT and ID maps.
Eastern Washington University asked what people do with one issue of a periodical, either state or federal, when they don't receive a second issue. Do other libraries catalog the first one, or wait until they receive a second issue? Many libraries catalog the first issue and either look for succeeding issues on the web or call the state library to see if they can locate other issues.
Meeting was adjourned.
After lunch, Whitman's library director gave the group a tour of the library.
Respectfully submitted,
Sue Anderson
